El Perrito reminds me a lot of Henry Gondorff, the Paul Newman character in The Sting. He's a polished grifter, and he knows exactly how to keep the marks coming back for more. He's memorized Chapter I of the political grifter's textbook, which explains the easiest way to fleece the rubes over and over again is to put on outrageous displays of public piety -- quote the Bible regularly and convince 'em you're doing the lord's work. The dumbest ones will fall for it every time because they believe in freedom of religion.
Conservative positions on religious freedom are remarkably similar to their positions on freedom of speech. Their level of tolerance varies depending on the religion or the speech, or whoever is practicing the religion or trying to speak freely. Once I understood that point, everything else fell into place.
