I haven't read the writing of every sports columnist in Texas, but among those I'm familiar with, Kirk Bohls of the Austin American Statesman is by far the biggest homer. To Kirk, Texas U is always the biggest and the best, regardless of the circumstances. Homeboy all the way.
As for me, I'm on that very, very short list of people who don't believe that TAMU and Texas U are joined at the hip. I wouldn't lose a minute's sleep if the Aggies and longhorns were in different conferences and never played another game of any kind against each other. I understand that's a minority viewpoint.
Added 6:34 pm, same day: The first shoe may be ready to drop. Nebraska to the Big Ten, bringing that conference to 12 teams (regardless of the nomenclature) ?
