Suckitude

This week was a relentless stream of bad news. In Austin, a tax crazy flew a small plane into an IRS office building, and much closer to home, an important member of my family was diagnosed with an uncommon type of melanoma, and is having an eye surgically removed on Monday. In today's world, if some lunatic would-be martyr doesn't get you, there's a good chance your own body will turn against you. For me, the week was a reminder that our lives are fragile things; the number of ways the existence we take for granted can vanish in an instant is disturbing to think about. I recently realized that most of my present habits, from the things I eat to the way I drive, are strictly designed to improve my odds.
