Nicknames

I had a nickname hung on me when I was a wee lad, and family members still use it when addressing me. Now I appropriate aliases with humorous connotations from movies to hang on my grandsons as nicknames --- I refer to the youngest as Jim Ferguson. I recently saw The Big Sleep, based on the Raymond Chandler detective novel and starring the always cool Humphrey Bogart as Philip Marlowe. Early in the movie, a dame asks Marlowe who he is and he wisecracks that he's Doghouse Reilly. The line broke me up, and now I'm deciding which boy gets Doghouse Reilly as a permanent tag.

  1. Too bad for Joel. Personally, I like Doghouse Reilly better than Jim Ferguson. "Jim Ferguson" sounds too much like an actual person. I bet there are plenty of J.F.'s out there...not too many "Doghouse's".

KEY FACT

Dedicated to Jim Ferguson. If you don't know who Jim Ferguson is, you (a) haven't seen The Missouri Breaks, or (b) have an inadequate ability to fully assimilate movie trivia.
